an early Advent prayer poem

In
this Season
approaching hope renewed,
may we steady our minds and steel our resistance to
the coming commercial tempest whose undertow erodes the Spirit.

Not that we might reject all
things good and tasty, delightful and fun,
but becuase our awareness is too easily distracted
by what draws our shallow focus
away from you and toward ourselves.

Lead us, Lord
to a simple and greater faith in doing what is right;
trusting our better instincts to do more for others,
and in so doing, to remain
more aware of your approaching presence, day by day.

“From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts forth its leaves, you know that summer is near. So keep awake—for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or at cockcrow, or at dawn, or else he may find you asleep when he comes suddenly. Keep awake.” Mark 13
